Heroes All

The freedom we enjoy today is the result of a long and hard-fought struggle. History tells us that notable men and women of the past dedicated their lives to fighting for our country’s freedom. But historical accounts also provide various (even contradicting) versions of the past, fueling arguments and even questioning the heroism of some individuals.

Saddened by the continuing debates and discussions on who is a hero, who is a heel, and the never-ending debate as to the who, how, when, where, and whys of the activities of the revolutionaries, Heroes All PH has been commissioned by a great grandson of General Emilio Aguinaldo.

The first order that he issued was “let us all unite so we can work together and put an end to slavery.” “Know thyself” was a trait that he carried. He knew his limitations and so, sought and appointed people with higher intellect and broader experience to help him in his acts of governance. . Thus, in his cabinet and for other positions as well, he appointed educated and capable people, like Baldomero Aguinaldo, as Secretary of War, Felipe Buencamino, as Secretary of Development, and Gregorio Araneta, as Secretary of Justice, to mention a few.”

He has no vices to speak of. He does not drink, does not smoke, and does not gamble. There are no movies for him if he can avoid them. Since our return from Europe six years ago, he has been to the movies only two or three times.
 
He never loses his temper. No cuss words for him at all. His only exclamation when somewhat angered is “Tinamaan ng kanin iyan,” literally, struck by a grain of rice.” He controls his feelings remarkably well.

Many years ago, I asked him at his home in Kawit, Cavite, if in the anonymity of his retirement he felt he had been forgotten by the people for whom he had fought, and he said with a smile, “My son, have you been a soldier?,” and when I answered  that my generation had known its own Tirad Pass and had been humbled in its own Palanan, he said,”after the battles are won and the dream of liberty attained, the people for whom the war was fought soon look to the new leader and soon readily consign the soldier to beggary and mendicancy. For such is the fate of the soldier, and a true soldier must accept such fate.”
