A teacher-turned Katipunero, Artemio Ricarte’s active involvement in the revolution started when he became a member of the balangay Mapagtiis, the KKK council in San Francisco de Malabon. Ricarte’s pen name in the Katipunan is “Vibora” (viper snake)
Ricarte was among the Katipuneros in Cavite waiting for the coordinated uprising on August 29, 1896. Unfortunately, no signal from Manila Katipuneros was seen, which made these Cavite Katipuneros impatient. From Noveleta, Cavite, Artemio rushed to San Francisco de Malabon and attacked the Spanish Garrison. The incident led the other Katipuneros in Noveleta and Kawit to follow suit.
